Why do you prefer Linux as the operating system if you buy hosting? I'm just mainly wondering because I'd say 80% of all people I know who have a clue about web hosting prefer Linux. I do personally prefer it because of its performance and compatibility features but the question is if you like it why? :)

Well most people dont really have a preference but since its so widely used just used it when they first bought hosting. Also hosts generally use linux since it so easy to set up on most distro's.
I think people stick with linux rather than go over to windows because they are familiar with the terms and concepts such as document roots etc. Really linux is superior to Windows and thats all thats relevant.

Because they need plenty of them.
Linux is free, and is, in theory, more reliable.

Due to the fact its more stable, uses less memory and cpu to the actual OS itself, its safer, more reliable aswell

i prefer linux servers
i can trust them rather then Win 2003 or other operating systems.
Its stable, uses low ram, low CPU usage. problems easy to fix. there are none-very little viruses for linux.
its cheaper (and not always free... depends on the build) but its shareware and loved by all

1) Its cheaper for webhosts
2) More stable [Needs to be up mostly 24/7]
3) More choice
4) More support with server applications like PHP.
preety much what everyone above said plus,
Its open source, so many developers out there it is riddiculous, most software for servers out there is linux based or compatible (eg cpanel, GDimage,).
Support and technicians are in abundance as well as the material.

You can run PHP on a windows server.
My main reason is cause it's cheap.
well not very cheap, but cheaper than windows.

For afew reasons I prefer Linux:
-Simple to install
-Cheaper than windows (sometimes free)
-Simple to use/administer
-Most Linux distro's come with pre-installed "server mode"
-Plenty of hosting technologies available for Linux

95% of Linux is free..

I would disagree, I found setting up my windows server much much much easier than setting up my linux server.
Also name me a server technology that does not have a windows counterpart.

Actually all LINUX is free. When you pay for it (i.e Red Hat) this is either for support or 3rd party additional features. The actual system is GNU therefore 100% free. :)

You don't as I said, its a combination of software and support, that is what you are paying for, not the operating system itself. The operating system is free but Red Hat has added 3rd party aspect to it so it can be sold. :)

There's always torrents ;)
Although they sometimes don't work well for OS's

Well its better because its more stable easier to use and its not made by bill gates. Also as there are so many of them getting support for Linux is a lot easier.

1/ Security.
Linux is mroe secure than windows, e.g by default Ubuntu(I no its not th ebest dist) doesn't create the root user account that's a logical target for Linux malware. Similar to MAC OS it's more obscure. A lower installed user base attracts fewer malware authors than Windows does. Within Linux there is also good disk encryption.
2/ You have access to thousands of free applications.
Its faster + more secure.
