Yes, what I did was just copy my drivers, along with all my docs to my pen drive and then wrote over my whole Hard Drive. The way you want to do it could still contain some risk when resizing the linux partition.

You will have to do it to an external device, as you cannot access Windows File Systems from Linux, and vice versa.

Yes you can, you can access Windows from Linux, never tried from Windows to Linux.
You just mount the windows drive..., Ive got it doing this on my Laptop...
1. Have XP
2. Partition the Drive, I used Acronis Disk Director Suite as It has a good reputation and 99.9% of the time, works.
3. Split XP parition in Half
4. Boot into Linux Install
5. Make 2 Partitions on Unallocated space, 1 for ROOT Directory and one for Swap (swap should be the same or more than the RAM you have).
6. It will ask wich OS you want to go on at boot up.
If in doubt, back up :)
If you want to go into something or other, you can make specific paritions for boot etc...

You don't need to download a partition editor if your installing the latest ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com) all you do is use nero or an iso burner and burn the iso to a 700 mb cd disk, boot it up if you don't know how click
here (http://http://www.hiren.info/pages/bios-boot-cdrom) it will take awile once it loads up you will have a live enviorement it will be slow cause your botting from your CD click install then follow on it will have the partition options in the installer.
