View Full Version : Taking The Plunge
Right well to cut a long story short, ive came into abit of money, and sometime next week i will be purchasing a iMac 24'.
I was just wondering, since ive only ever used a Windows operating system, im guessing my modem won't be Mac compatible meaning that i wont be able to connect to the internet, what software/equipment would i need to buy for my iMac to be able to connect to the internet?
Also is there any recommendations on software or products i should buy to make my trasformation to Mac world, better?
Cheers.

I wouldn't advise moving to a Mac, especially such an expensive one yet. Get a lower end Mac, such as a Mac Mini and try it out, because if it turns out you're not that keen on it you would have wasted an awful lot of money.
If it turns out you don't like, just buy an uber Windows PC. For the money of a 24" iMac, you could get an extremely good PC.

My friend has got a iMac 20' and i love it, so theres no problem in that department, also i HATE vista with avengance, so theres no point me getting a windows PC as i dont want to use vista. Also how can u call windows as 'uber'?

I'm using the word uber as you'd get some extremely good components in it for iMac price (£1148), quite possibly quad core and 2GB RAM, and a far larger hard drive. What you get in the 24" Mac is basically what I paid £300 for :P

I would personally reccomend a mac over a windows pc, and judging by you its not an issue anyway as you've already decided. To combat your modem issue, I would reccomend getting a router, doesn't have to be wireless unless you want it to be. Any router should work fine.
If you're switching from windows then possibly insall Parallels Desktop of there are any windows programs you need specifically but mac os x will most likely have an alternative anyway.
Any questions? PM me or ask me in this thread.

You should buy a wireless router for your internet. iMacs come with built in wi-fi afaik.

He CAN install Windows on it, so I doubt it will be an awful lot of money wasted.

Garageband comes pre-installed on all current macs.
Microsoft office for mac is a bit lame, I have it and as its not universal binary it runs pretty slow on intel macs.
If you get photoshop get CS3 as its universal binary and boots in like 3 seconds.

Macs are easy with that kind of stuff.
You might not have to buy anything extra to use the internet.
usually you just plug in the cat5 cable.
If you have dial up then you might need to get a modem which you can add to your purchase on the site.
You will be happy with the computer
actually I would wait until monday.
There is a big apple developers conference (WWDC) and new iMacs might come out.

AGREED BIG TIME. We are gonna see some better specs here and possibly a whole new kind of iMac.
Alos, get NeoOffice, http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php as it is more stable than microsoft office, free and just as good (Has all the features, word processor, spreadsheet etc...) Except that the presentation program is CRAP.

Macs r kinda crap compared to pc's, pcs are much eaiser to use and works with more stuff than a mac, and for mac you always have to use the alternative stuff.. I got an pc and mac pro but i prefer using the pc for the general stuff, and macs r generally good for art n designe n stuff,..

Breaths of fresh air are not grossly overpriced.
