I don't really understand how they work, would someone explain.

erm, wikipedia :] bascially a virtual airline is just like an airline in r/l but wihout a few things and its virtual :]

I think the thing i dont uderstand are PiREPS and STARS

Pireps are pliot reports, so the va has info on what flight you've done, which you will undertsnad once you join the va, and STARS are what you need to know in or out of a va, there standard transport arrival routes, which you'll find on charts that you may have.
