So, if you install Linux onto a CD, will it run off the CD, or does it have to be installed onto your PC?

Also, will it overwrite the XP OS?

some distros have a live cd that will run off the CD without touching your PC. Some don't have have to be installed to use.

oh, so you just click on the cd thing, and it'll load something up and it'll run Linux?

so when you take out the CD it goes back to windows?

or you could create a new partition on your hard drive and install it to that

that way it would be seperate from xp and should ask you as your pc is loading which operating system you would like to use

Yeh, stick the disk it, boot it, then just reboot without the CD in to go back to windows (for a live cd)

Ubuntu, www.ubuntu.com (http://www.ubuntu.com) i think :P Also, kubuntu, edubuntu, xubuntu there are some more i think that arent ubuntu based. But Ubuntu rules tbh.

one more thing, do i need any sort of program to install ubuntu onto the disc?

or do i stick it straight on and run it from there?

You'll need to be able to burn ISO images. something like Alcohol 120%, MagicISO or Nero can do this.

I found this free guide, with a free alternative.

and my PC is quite noisy anyway, all i'll hear is the fan.

Why be paranoid? :P Anyway, yeh, when you get it, you will love it !! If it wasn't for the games I play I would be using Ubuntu as my Main OS right now.

k so lemmie get this straight

install it on CD
pop CD in disc tray
it runs linux as an OS (From the CD)
take cd out
it goes back to XP

?

lol, and in another few days another version of ubuntu is to be released.

Ubuntu rocks

in my room at the momment i have 3 computers and a laptop.... sadly only one runs ubuntu but i'm using it to watch scrubs at the momment

ok, ive read some stuff and i want to install Linux onto a partion.

when i click "install" (when im running it off a live CD) it gives me several options, all of which i dont know which one to choose

can anyone help...? thanks :D remember that i want linux on a partion :P

sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper
sudo apt-get install <drivername>
sudo <drivername> -w/lib/firmware <driverfile
sudo ndiswrapper -i <driverinfofile>
modprobe ndiswrapper

Im BBB, Im on UBUNTU and it works off disk and the web works automatically!

Woot. This is helpful if windows xp mucks up or my dad puts a password on it!
