The thing with FPTP is that once a major party is overtaken in % by an upstart party, FPTP then works against them in terms of retaining seats. In 1983 the same thing very nearly happened to the Labour Party had it not been for a difference of about 2% of the vote between it and the Social Democratic Party (SPD): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_U...neral_election
