They can report it as lost/stolen and it'll be barred (almost) worldwide
they bar the handset aswell as the sim. your sim won't get locked but with your sim in it they could report you to your network.
i'd remove the sim and hand it in. it isn't worth it with the capabilities of handsets now-a-days.

Hmmm, I think I'm just gonna see how it goes, it's the HTC Magic btw It's really good, I'm glad the guy who lost it was on contract otherwise I'd feel really guilty but he can just claim on the insurance

a lot of people don't insure their phones. when they come in my work and they don't have insurance i'm always happy. one of them snapped at me because i was smiling. it sounds evil but we sell it for a reason. then they think it's your issue...

If your friend didnt remove the SIM, the owner would have been found knowing his number is under his/she name or whoever pays for it and can be given back.
Meh, I would keep it.

Haha well the network knows the IMEI so have the potential to block it from any sim card and can find the details of any sim card within it. If you take it to any second hand shops etc, they'll also check the IMEI of it before you trade it in and hand it in to the police if it's been reported as stolen. Not really worth the risks in my opinion.
