Sam Mostyn is an exceptional leader who represents the best of modern Australia, Albanese said on Wednesday.

She will be sworn into the role in July, taking over from David Hurley.

I am deeply honoured by this great privilege and look forward to representing the values, hopes and aspirations of all Australians, Mostyn said. I will never underestimate or take for granted the expectations that come with high office and I am ready to serve with integrity, compassion and respect.

Governors-General are the monarchs representative in Australia, the nations highest office after the King of Australia. They serve at the pleasure of the sovereign, typically for a term of five years.

Hmmm she seems very woke. Generally Australian Governor-Generals have been good picks, and both sides of the political aisle have rightly chosen people who are more or less apolitical - usually former army generals in Australia's case. Canada on the other hand has chosen quite a few political Governor Generals, and it has resulted in controversy/having to resign from the office early. With any luck she'll keep her opinions and her activism to herself whilst in the role.

For those who don't know, the Governor-General is above the Prime Minister (but below the monarch) and basically acts as a regent for The King as he cannot be in all 15 countries that have him as Head of State at the same time. So the Governor-General carries out the day-to-day duties of the monarch, such as swearing in the Prime Ministers, having a weekly meeting with the PM, awarding honours and granting royal assent to laws passed by the Parliament.

She'll likely be hosting The King and Queen for their planned visit to Australia in the autumn.
