Southgate, who won 57 caps for England, joined Boro from in a £6.5 million deal from Aston Villa during the summer of 2001.

He has gone on to play over 200 league and cup for the club, succeeding Paul Ince as captain in 2002 and leading Boro to Carling Cup victory two years later, the club's first major silverware. Last season, he skippered the club throughout their extraordinary 15-game run to the UEFA Cup final.
