Hmm.. I think a car like this would be good:
Click (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2002-CITROEN-XSARA-PICASSO-SX-HDI-DIESEL-ESTATE-CARS_W0QQitemZ260043823554QQihZ016QQcategoryZ18174 QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
Although the 'buy it now' price is over your price limit, you could bid on it.

On second thoughts, it looks a bit too hard to run, hang on lemme look for some more

This one looks nice (click (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mitsubishi-Space-Star-1-8-GLX-CARS-WANTED-07789408911_W0QQitemZ190045273840QQihZ009QQcategor yZ18230QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)) and its within your price limit!

Ebay is a good place to search for cars, thats if you can trust it..

I have a 2003 Honda Accord EX with 45000miles and it worked out to be about 7500pounds.
I know 7500 pounds is over your budget, but that is for an Accord with everything (alloys, nav, leather, moonroof, A/C & power everthing). But I think that a well equiped accord or civic would work?

I ebayed some cars.

It all depends on your budget.
Ford ka (i dont like it but its cheap and cheerful)
Peugeot 106,206
Fiat Punto (new one and old)
Mercades A class (They are quite cheap)
Audi A2 (They are quite cheap).

You also have to remember about the insurance groups. Some cars are high, some are low. Ford Ka is insurance group 2 lol which is cheap. I think it goes to something like 20 but im not 100%. So before buying a car, check what insurance group as if you are anew driver it will cost a bomb load of money if it is quite high.

I was just looking on ebay, and they do loads of cars for decent pirces, but all you can trust is the pictures they show you.
I'd just suggest cars that everyone else has suggested
Peugeot 106,206
Renault Clio
VW Golf
Corsa

You can also go to those car auction places aswell.

get a fiat punto for a number of reasons, good car with a small engine so the insurnace will be lower cost, the car still handles very well and there is a fair few around so it will mean a cheaper price but not a change in quality. It is a hard car to chav up as well so your safe to admit you have that car to you friends and the value of them doesnt drop very far after purchuse i think its only 1/5 of the price every 2 years which is better than most

basically buy a fiat punto
