Rope was too long, so too much speed on the drop by the time the rope went taught.

Yeah. A small miscalculation can cause that. It basically has to be just right (the length of the rope / height of the fall).

To be honest, I laughed when I first head that.

You can still be sentenced to death by hanging in the UK...for high reason, aka assassinating the Queen.

You can still be sentenced to death by hanging in the UK...for high reason, aka assassinating the Queen.

You can't in any way be sentenced to death in the UK.
