Hey guys,

Well, I've been having this problem for 3 or 4 days now, and I don't know what i've done to suddenly make it happen.

Like the title suggests,
some sites load, some don't.

I use firefox, but it's the same in IE.

Examples of sites that load fine, and quickly:
eBay
HabboxForum

Examples of sites that don't load at all:
Facebook
MySpace
Google searches

Any ideas? Anyone?

+rep for all ideas, even if they don't work!
So, suggest anything!

Please helppp!

Sounds like a cookie problem to me. Check your settings. Try cleaning your computer and running a spy check.

Stephen!

He says it's in both FF and IE. If i'm mistaken please tell me, but i don't believe they share cookies. Could be an ISP issue

+repped for suggestion ;D.

What exactly do you suggest I look for in my settings?
What do you mean exactly by 'cleaning'? Cleaning whatt?
Andddddd.... what spy check do you reccommend?

Thanks!

;].

EDIT: +rep. I have used FF and IE, yes. Should I call my ISP (Sky)?

Well you probs know more than me on this :D

I would try cleaning the disc drive - accessories-system tools - clean disc drive.

Spybot Search and destroy free version - google it.

Blocking cookies can stop you seeing some web-sites but I will leave that subject to Stephen who maybe able to explain more about the ISP issue.

Other than that can you restore it back to when it worked properly?

try pressing ctrl + f5 :)

Jaiisun
17-04-2008, 06:36 PM
- Cleaned disk drive
- Downloaded, Installed and ran Spybot S&D, it deleted a couple of things that sounded nasty

But still nothing.
Should I reboot?

+rep for 'ctrl + f5' suggestion.

But sadly, it doesn't do a thing.

Yes try rebooting. Have you got a firewall that maybe denying access to these sites?
Asked a friend of mine as well - he said if you have a wireless connection it could be something to do with the settings of the router. Maybe trying rebooting router if you have one and of still no luck ring Sky :D

Jaiisun

- Rebooted
No change.

I use the windows firewall, and both IE and FF are in the 'exceptions'.

Also, I am using wireless. But my mum also uses wireless on her laptop, and it works perfectly.

So, because it works perfectly for my mum, and not for me... surely ringing Sky won't help, because the connection is fine?

This is confusing me so much!

Thanks!
Anything else I can try?

Is you Mum directly connected to the router? Are you on a portable router?

Jaiisun

Eurm... it's not portable.

So, i'd take the first option ;P.

Well if you are both plugged into the same router then it could be a dodgy connection. Try swopping the cables around and then see if you mother has the same problem with her laptop? If not try re-installing your Isp software. Otherwise I think you will need to contact sky.

Jaiisun
17-04-2008, 07:07 PM
Sorry, if i've confused you, but i've confused myself.

Me and my mum aren't wired to the router.

We both run wirelessly.

Which is why I find it especially strange that her laptop works perfectly, but i'm having this problem.

But, why would this be Sky's fault?
Because the connection must be fine because my mum's connection is perfect.

Thanks.

So neither of you are directly connected to the router? Has your mum age restricted you at all or have you got general 18+ access to the internet?

Jaiisun

Nope - neither are wired to the router.

And, my mum has no access to the router settings what-so-ever; they're all mine! x]

No, no :) When your email account was set up - there is no age restriction - like a parental block on sites over 18?

Try turning off windows firewall, then try to get on one of the effected site. I used to have this problem on my old laptop (my mum figured out how to fix it, I'll see if she remembers)

I'll try that now.
I did have a quick look at anything I could change, but there's nothing I can see that would cause the problem.

Okay, well I have to go in a minute. If it still doesn't work have a look at internet options under privacy and security and see if the settings are too high and maybe blocking the sites. Otherwise you may need to speak to your ISP to make sure your settings are up to date and correct. They may have updated something in the last few days.

Some sites may be denied access.
Try accessing them via IE > Tools > Internet Options

However, the only other thing I can recommend is uninstalling IE & FireFoz and re-installing.

Good luck<3

Okay do me a favour - click Start->Run open up "cmd" (without quotes).

type "ping google.co.uk" (without quotes) and press enter.

Tell me if that works okay - if you get a message like:
"Ping request could not find host google.co.uk. Please check the name and try again." then its a DNS problem,

If it pings but says timed out, then its a router / ISP problem,

If it pings fine, then the problem is local.

Do you use a router?

iFuseDan
17-04-2008, 09:22 PM
I tell everyone this that ever reports networking problems, run symnrt - will remove traces of norton internet security - reason being is that most computers (other then self-built) generally come with it pre-installed. You can grab it from http://www.symantec.com/symnrt - You'd be suprised how many computers I've fixed that had a "norton" issue even though it wasnt actively installed...

Click Start->Run, type in "cmd" (without quotes), and press okay, you'll get a black window pop up.

Run the following commands, each time without the quotes, and press enter/return after each one

Command 1: "netsh int ip reset c:\reset.log"
Command 2: "netsh winsock reset"
Command 3: "netsh firewall reset"

Then reboot your computer, if your running vista let me know as the instructions are slightly different if you have UAC on.

Only reason I asked is there is a known problem with the BT Homehub and this. If you've got a DMZ setup on your router then that too could come into play, however now im more inclined to say its a firewall issue. You've shown you can communicate with the remote server, just not on socket 80 (http traffic), so question is whats stopping that? However you've said your only running windows firewall, which you've tried disabling? and if you've run the commands i've said it's been reset too. One thing left to double check:

Open up your HOSTS file
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
in something like notepad, and paste back here - just want to make sure that you've not been hikacked in the sense the domains are pointing elsewhere.

Jaiisun
17-04-2008, 11:32 PM
Well, for starters, I don't use a BT Homehub.

And yeah, I have tried disabling my windows firewall, it did nothing. Neither did the commands you advised me to do.

This really has confused me.

Just 'cause it looks tidier, the hosts file can be found in the following spoiler:
# New HOSTS file brought to you by X
#
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one

# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.

Thanks!

EDIT: Just remembered! It was suggested to me by a member of another forum that I downloaded a 'fix' for HOSTS files - that didn't work.
Just thought you might want to know why the guy's email is there (removed incase.. yeah).

iFuseDan
17-04-2008, 11:38 PM
Delete everything below
127.0.0.1 localhost
I dont know what the rest of that is, but its not in the norm?
My host file for example looks like:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost

Try that editing it to be exacly like mine, and then reboot, however backup before you do any changes (just to be on the safe side). once rebooted try sites that dont work ;)

Just rebooting now...

If I remember right, i'm sure I had the same (if not, very similar) problem like a year ago, and it turned out to be a program called 'PeerGuardian' blocking IPs of some sites.

If there any way you could check out whether a similar thing is happening?

in cmd type "route print" and copy back everything it says alot of the time programs will just create virtual routes that end up nowhere to block data, i'll have a look to see if there is a program to detect instances of things like peerguardian though.

Arabic, for you you'll probably need to re-flash your homehub - i dont have the exact location for the image though, but its on your homehub installation disk.

If you can - you can download it from: http://static.btopenworld.com/broadband/adhoc_pages/drivers/Windows_recovery_626E.zip
The instructions for this are at: http://static.btopenworld.com/broadband/documents/BT_Home_Hub_recovery_instructions_Windows.pdf
