View Full Version : Champions League Final 2008 - Manchester United vs Chelsea - Moscow

In the first ever all English European Cup final, Manchester United, the newly crowned Champions of England take on the runners-up to both the Premierleague and League Cup at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. Avram Grant is gunning to be the first Chelsea manager to win a European cup and Alex Ferguson is ready to give the Devils a 3rd Champions League title.

Fans from all over the UK and Europe have made the trip out to Moscow to see the match and some fans paying over £1,000 for the trip. Over 200 Chelsea fans were left stranded at Gatwick airport this morning as their flight had been cancelled and there is no chance of them getting to Moscow.

Other fans made up obscure ways of getting to Moscow which included road trips, 17 hour train journies and several flights. The cheapest way that a fan got to Moscow was using boat, train and air which cost him £285.

Chelsea suffered a set back in the way of Ashley Cole whose ankle was injured yesterday after a rash tackle by team-mate Claude Makelele in training. The England international is set to start at left back though, despite the injury setback.

Alex Ferguson has a full squad to choose from tonight and is finding it hard who to play - all 23 players that flew out to Moscow wants to be a part, but only 18 can. It's sure to be a testing time of Ferguson's managerial skills as he plays Chelsea for the 4th time this season.

The pitch at the Luzhniki Stadium has been the main talking point over the past few days with the pitch having to be imported from Slovakia and relayed in quick time. Both managers refused to comment negatively on the pitch and Ferguson says the pitch is "no excuse" if they fail to win.

The referee, like the pitch, is also from Slovakia and is "not to Premierleague standard". It's near enough guarenteed that the loosing side will blame part of the result on the pitch - it's got to be.

Kick off is at 19:45 BST and it's on ITV1, Sky Sports 1 and Radio Five Live.

My personal view 1-0 United.

Chelsea: 1 goal in 40's. Guess, '41.

Manchester United: 1 goal in 70's. Guess, '73.

I think it might end up 2-2 after ET after two ET goals.

Penalties, 4-3 to Manchester United. :P

Well done fatty Lampard! How lucky can you get? Tevez misses a golden chance then two deflections put it straight in the path of Lampard. The amount of luck they get week in and week out is amazing. I'm so glad that United scored when they did cos up to that point the game was exactly what I thought it would be - crap. That goal meant Chelsea had to go for it, now they'll hopefully both come out and play some football.

lol I love it when people claim Chelsea are all about luck, not counting the fact that they have a lot of skill in the team and of course (if we are to talk of luck) negate the opposition's luck by the skill of not messing up so much.

I didn't say they were ALL about luck, but they are an exceedingly lucky team. I can give plenty of examples just against Arsenal.

The Essien screamer - Cole fouled Hleb, shouldn't have stood, Chelsea's long standing home record should have ended then which was two years ago.

Carling Cup final, Drogba's second goal offside, the game this season at Stamford bridge, Drogba's first goal offside. In 2005 when Van Persie got a goal wrongfully ruled out for offside at 0 - 0, and Chelsea went on to win the game:

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_kmafp/is_200512/ai_n15938164

That's JUST against Arsenal as well.. you cannot deny that's lucky, and you can't say that's Chelsea skill, it's just ref/linesman errors that don't seem to happen as much for other teams as they do for Chelsea.

I have to admit Man utd played well but god, Chelsea deserved that game more than anyone else. I can't blame it on any players in Chelsea, but Man Utd, Tevez should've been off before Drogba and yeah he was stupid to do that but they didn't need Drogba to win that game.

It's a shame to see a game finish on Penalties, it happens everytime and the team who don't deserve it always win and they seem to think they've got bragging rights despite narrowly escape a 3-1 loss.

Unlucky Chelsea, seriously you played better than any European team and played against the damn elements. Well done to Man Utd for putting up a fight though, I'm not going to say they didn't put up an admirable effort.

Seeing John Terry miss a penalty, then cry, almost makes up for United winning.

Also, it had to be an ex-Arsenal, Liverpool AND Man City player that gave United the champions league.

Hey guess what you'd be doing right now if you lost? You'd be waving goodbye to your star player Ronaldo! Funnily enough, I don't think any Chelsea player will leave that team for they deserved to win and frankly, Man Utd didn't. =/

I hope deep down the Man Utd players realise that too.

Coming from an Everton fan who really did want to beat Chelsea in the premier league, +rep. Someone who speaks sense in this thread. Can I also say that Chelsea were even having the referee against them in that second half? At least 2 potential corners not given to them, a throw-in not given to them and a free kick which was very blatent, not given to them.

Amazingly enough though, Man Utd fans have the audacity to brag. I've lost all respect in Man Utd fans (and yeah, I had some).

I think it was 6 - 5 to Man Utd on Penalties. Could've been 7 - 6 since it was really close. I admire Lampard because I think we ALL know why he looked up to the skies whenever he scored a goal.

United should have put away 2 atleast first half. It shouldda been wrapped up before half time. Chelsea dominated second half, unlucky to score and then ET was pretty fifty-fifty for me except Chelsea had the best attacking edge. Ronaldo just shrunk to half his size. He might aswell have never been there. I feel for Chelsea fans though, hell of a cruel way to lose.

Ronaldo, Ronaldo, Ronaldo. Out of all the people to miss!

And Ronaldo wouldn't have been off to anywhere. United have said theres no way he's leaving AND he's signed until 2012.

Ronaldo has hit his peak in my opinion, Kalou will be the player to look out for in Chelsea and I think Nani will be the top dog next season for Man Utd. I'd bet top dollar on that one. I think Ronaldo being the only player NOT to score was pretty hilarious, but Man Utd fans won't notice that one bit. I think there shoulda been ALOT more goals than what was in it.

Tevez, jesus just get him out. He gives that club a bad name, and Rooney? You may as well call him Casper.

Might just have to agree. 42 goals in a season will be hard to surpass. I hope Nani matures abit because I like him. I personally like his style and I see potential. I like the irony that Ronaldo didn't score personally. In the Premier League, scored the goals that won them the premier and here in Moscow, him missing the target almost cost United the Champions League.

I personally didn't see what Tevez did, what did he do? I knew it all kicked off after whatever he did. You're right about Rooney, so overrated. United need a decent, quick striker.

I think Rooney was just completely out of place in that game, he wasn't involved in any of the tactics and I think that's because he was central and that game was played mostly in the wings. When Nani came on I did go "Uh oh Man Utd might just win this one" lol, he's just got some sort of awe about him which sets him aside from other players!

Tevez firstly grabbed Ashely Cole(?) by the face and pulled him down to the floor when Man Utd were in a position to score, and he was the only person between them and the goal. I think it went to a bad kick by Man Utd after that, but I just thought Tevez should've been sent off way before that incident even broken out between him and Drogba. If anything, Tevez and Drogba should've both been sent off but no. I find it unbelievable.

Wierd 'cos me and my brother were like "What!?! Why the hell are you bringing Rooney off!" I hope your right though, I have a little soft spot for Nani. :P

Tensions were running high all match though. Drogba was out of order with that slap and to be honest, if it were not for his team mates holding him back Vidic would've torn him apart. They would've been scraping drogba off the pitch. Vidic is one scary guy.

Anyway, I'm off to sleep, got maths with my Chelsea supporter teacher tommorow morning. :D

I'm right, I hope. xD I think Chelseas attack really did give Man Utd a taste of their own medicine which is always nice to see lol. Drogba just... He was stupid to do that, I don't know why he did! I believe Chelsea don't need Drogba to win games though, sure he's the top goalscorer and has got them out of some pickles but there are players in that squad, which given the chance will better Drogba.

Ronaldo reportedly told an interviewer that he would be staying at Man Utd. last night, then later contridicted himself by saying he cant guarantee he'll stay? He did say he wouldn't leave until they lifted the Champions League.
Chelsea outplayed Man Utd. for a large part of the game, and Lampard was spot on with his aftermatch interview. I thought Vidic was a bit of a hot head for a lot of the game.

The thing is, it doesn't matter what a player says if they get offered LOADS of $$$$$ then they're going to accept because most of them are like that, including Ronaldo.
