Indeed... i'm not really impressed by any of it

infact when you hear the PR guy for the "Birdnest" bragging about the amount of time that went into it and that people died in its creation (2) you start to think...

Oh dear...

Well as the idotic london mayor of ours has said... "under budget" ... can't see why.. unless hes planing on pocketing the money.

So i'm expecting the london underground to be used as the main transport... think of all the athletes being tazored and shot for carrying their javalins ontothe train.

No offence to you as a person but thats the most bitter sounding thing ive ever heard and the most ricidulous, the annoying hoohah? The man is the greatest olympian of all time and proved it in the past 16 days. Thats something for everyone to admire, its an amazing feat to think he became the best in the world 8 times at something he does.

I dont want to sound horrible, but I dont give two hoots about him, The olympics should be about the amateur stars, UK has done exactly that, Phelps was well know pre-olympics, its just a bit annoying.

And wow, he wont a lot of medals, he was a terrific performer, but ok, he does not need to be on the TV ALL THE TIME. :)

Cypher-
24-08-2008, 12:28 PM
Its not about giving athletes the stage to become well known within society and the medua, its about proving you are the best in the world at what you do. Phelps deserves every accolade that comes his way, hes a truly amazing individual for doing what he worked hard for and is able to do.

well obviosuly the atheletes don't go on the underground. They live in the Olympic village... Oflr where ever their sport is held

By saying that everybody should be amateur, you're just completing ruining the Olympics. There's only 1 sport in the Olympics that people are amateurs - boxing. Well, Usain Bolt shouldn't have been it, he's a professional. Oh, wait, so is everybody else.

EDIT: I can see the 2012 opening ceremony being just drive-by shootings and knife crime. The closing ceremony will just see the athletes being shot at.

No, I dont mean EVERYONE should be amateur, obv you need professionals or it would be crap.

I think the olympics has lost its touch. Its been alright in Beijing, its gonna fail in London. Im not the only one thinking this.

I just think it would be better to see new athletes rather than the same old pros, but thats opinion.

New athletes are introduced all the time. You can't say to some 21 year-old world champion e.g Usain Bolt, that he can't come back and compete in London because new people have to be seen. If you'd watch other things, you'd realise that new athletes are coming up all the time.

I do watch 'other things'. I mean like, Olympics should be the big part where they are showcased, as I said, you do need professionals, not ALL amateurs. Ofc we will see Bolt and Phelps in the next olympics, your making out as if I said 'get bolt and phelps off the olympics'.

This will be a laugh, watching BoJo accepting the flag. 2012 is gonna be a terrible event.

@kk, exactly. Although yes, pros will always be there, and they will be accepted. The olympics is where they are meant to become 'legends' and well known. I just think Phelps got WAY to much 'air-time'. Yeah, he won 8 medals. It does not make him a legend, jeez. He is a US Hero, maybe, not a worldwide/olympics legend.

2 young girls waving there, aka. Chinas gymnastics team

No, the Olympics were created in ancient Greece to show which city in Greece was the most powerful, without fighting each other. The Modern Olympics were reborn in 1896 and they were for amateurs. If you've been watching Sky Sports News recently you would have seen clip of the Olympics in the 1910s. No-one went to watch. From the 70s, it changed and look at the crowds they get now and the people that watch it.

You obviously are not understanding me.

He is not the greatest ever at all. He is one of the best, he is amazing, yes. That is to be recognised, you are pushing him for more than he is. The americans make everything more dramatic than it is, prime example - Phelps.

I wonder how long before it turns out he was taking Performance Enhancing Drugs.. paha :) [Jks]

Apart from the fact that he has the highest number of godl medals for an individual.

Your having a go at the Americans for "bigging" him up when, quite frankly, the worst country for that is the UK. If he was British, no-one would say anything about him having all there "airtime"

Yes, they were very good, but the silly amount of focus thats on them is annoying.

Back on topic, this London themed performance is good, Leona doing some warbling, Yeahh, Led Zeppelin Guitarist FTW. Thats class, David Beckham is showing up in a min. This is giving me goosebumps :P

I'm really looking forward to London 2012, but I have to say I personally wasn't that impressed with our segment there. It was alright, but nothing spectacular.

Boris looked like an idiot there, strolling up with his hands in his pockets and then shaking them about like a madman. Good thing he didn't get to speak

Ah well, the 2012 party looks pretty good.

The countdown looked fake to begin with but then didn't... It is possible to make them fireworks though and the ones they faked on the opening.

They fake them by showing us a video of them with them computer generated

Oh so the explosions were live and the fireworks were done seperately? Are the effects incredibly good, as in, the smoke trails put in aswell as the bangs and the lights or are they the real ones? It looks good either way :P

Its not an opinion that he is the greatest its a proven fact lol.

Its not fact that he is the greatest Olympian of all time. It is a matter of opinion. You could take the view that because he has the most medals of all time he is the greatest Olympian, however you could say that Sir Steve Redgrave is the greatest Olympian of all time for getting 5 Gold Medals consecutivley in 5 different Olympic Games. Michael Phelps got 8 golds, as he had eight opportunities to do so - Sir Steve Redgrave only has once chance to get a gold as Rowing isn't as vast as the Swimming events. You can only specialise in one or two areas of Rowing whereas in Swimming you can excel in a lot of areas. I personally dont think that Michael Phelps is the greatest Olympian of all time. It takes a lot more to have a career spanning over 20 years worth of Olympic Games, and taking the Gold in your individual event each time in my honest opinion. Im sure if Sir Steve had the oppurtunity to participate in 8 aspects of rowing, he would!

</RANT>

I did like the closing ceremony. However I dont think it was as good as the opening. That was something truly spectacular :D

I was more interested in Phelps than the Red Arrows. ;) Fair enough, he's American, but he's a legend and I'm glad he actually decided to come to London to talk for just a minute or two. The British athletes actually live in the UK, so we can hear from them any time, but talking to Phelps is a much rarer opportunity.

Seeing him today in London was the first time I've heard the guy speak. I haven't seen any interviews with him. I understand the BBC were only allowed to ask him one question during the Olympics as well, they never talked to him after he had finished his events like they did with Ryan Lochte and everyone else. Everyones talking about him but to my understanding he hasn't talked about himself much.

I can't believe he was in London during the party earlier, I should have gone! :(

But only a swimmer could ever get that amount, due to the fact Swimming is the only event that its possible to achieve it in due to its vast amount of different events. If you were a Rower you wouldn't be able to achieve that as it isn't possible in that sport. Thats why I think its more of an achievement for Sir Steve Redgrave to have won 5 gold medals in 5 different Olympics consecutivley. :8! So really it is a matter of opinion :D!!
