Our school has just got one. Basically, everything is now done via the internet. Everyone has their own log-in, personal to them. They can receive messages on it and all work is set via the VLE (virtual learning environment). You can also access your email through it and access the school drives; allowing you to continue work at home without having to use a memory stick or email yourself. There is also chat and forums part where you can talk to everyone throughout the school via a forum, much like this one.

It's weirdddddd, anyone else have one at their school?

and thens theres the VLE where teachers put up loads of stuff which is really good coz they put loads of revision stuff on it!

The school has its own network yeah but it's internal only, can't access it from the outside. I never really benefit from it :S

I would quite like something like this at my school but we have nothing similar, seems like its pretty useful (Especially for being able to access stuff from home)

My headteacher was considering mini laptops in which we all did our work from that?

Other than that, everyone in the school has their own log-in anyway for I.T classes and such.

Sounds fun does yours. Saves paper is what I told my head :)

we also have a VLE
but its not used for everything
it has like the courses for every subject, like modules and stuff
and you can upload your homework from school onto it,
and its only mainly used in ict,
and it doesn't have a chat thing either.

my school were testing moodle, but I haven't actually got to use it, but we all have a separate logon and we can access our files from home, using ranger outpost. we can access our emails at home and also we use mymaths sometimes.

Immenseman
21-05-2009, 06:15 PM
yeah i think most schools can use mymaths and check their school emails at home now. your school was probably testing it and will introduce it for september or something

My school uses Fronter. Had it about 3 years now I think. Forums, chat, shared network, documents and a hand-in folder are really useful on there. It's good to check news updates and school messages as well.

Used to have it in my old school, it was a load of pants.

We've got the Portal in college, however thats still pants as they've only just started developing it and only the IT groups use it. So yeah.

I hate all this virtual nonsense, just wastes time for teachers and if its anything like my school, the network crashes at least once a week. Back to basics I prefer, nothing better than a old teacher who knows their stuff teaching it on a board.

I think one of the IT teachers when I was in education was one of the pioneers of bringing it to UK ed. He had conferences with Microsoft in London about it.

yeah it's alright when you need it in our school, just able to put things on the database basicially and when you want the stuff you log in and save the document

mine's frog too haha.
it's funny though because there's a little group of people from my year who are in the site "team" (random people)
who have classroom controls/are forum mods, got some guys pw and we were shutting down peoples internet in class, was quite funny.
don't see this working in the long run though, too easy for students to mess things up..

We have our own log-in, e-mail, access to the RM Shared Area + the intranet. It got updated when I moved up, which was about 3 yrs ago, so it must have been there a while.

Yeah but the school removed the forums, chat, profiles and anything else remotely interesting.
Coz we abused it apparantly

Yeh, I hate it and everyone complains because no one knows how to use it lol.

We have something called fronter or MLE
It's nice because it's got revision stuff and teachers can post homework on there instead of handing out sheets or books. There was even an e-mail section until the IT tech guys found out that we were e-mailing each other in lessons instead of working, and promptly blocked it.

At school we just used shared folders which got rather confusing but in college we had a VLE was really handy so that we could continue with work at home or submit assignments.

We have this thing called blackboard. Kinda useless though, only some of my professors used it, the majority didn't. And the ones that did use it were technologically impaired and always had issues with posting up lecture powerpoints and what not.

The Professor
11-06-2009, 05:01 PM
Yeah we had one installed about 4 years ago. Thing is we just use remote desktop to get onto the school system from home and the school has a really organised drive structure which it puts the work and resources and stuff on and its had that since I joined in 2003. So yeah, its pretty redundant really. The only time we used it was when our english teacher thought it'd be clever to post some english homework on there last year but it broke and she got annoyed. We've not used it since :P

Immenseman

Well ours was only introduced like whenever I made this thread and is actively used.
