The 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics will be held in Berlin, Germany from 15-23 August 2009.
The Championships will be staged in the 74,845-seat Olympiastadion, which underwent a €242 million renovation ahead of the 2006 FIFA World Cup of football. The Marathon events as well as the events in Racewalking will have their start and finish at the Brandenburg Gate.
In 2006 it was announced that the design of the event will be held in the colors blue and green. The organizers announced a budget of €45 million to stage the event.
Athletes will be hosted during the event in the Hotel Estrel (950 rooms) and Hotel Berlin (650 rooms). Berlin was announced the winning bidder by the IAAF on 6 December 2004 beating out bids from Split (Croatia), Valencia (Spain), Brisbane (Australia), Brussels (Belgium), Delhi (India), Casablanca (Morocco) and Daegu (South Korea).
