I was wondering about the safety on busy tubes/train stations. If people are dieing from falling infront of a train, jumping infront of it suicidally etc then they should think of something secure.

Why don't they build (as if it were london tube) a fence from bottom to ceiling across the whole track that is visible and able to jump on and then have gates where the train doors will open. When the train arrives the gates, automatically open, when the train has gone they shut.

Like Airports with there trains that take you to the terminal etc (not like that with glass etc cause it would cost a lot) but fences. It seems a easy idea, don't understand why they aint done it.

My diagram :D (Red is the wall, Orange is automatic gates)

Thats all well and good if it was all automatic but it is, there are drivers so they wont stop at exactly infront of the doors each time. Its been thought of many times before but not that practical.

With all the people having to get onboard, it's more dangerous having a gate.

You know those pinpoint hammers you get on trains next to the window? They're there for a reason... to break the windows in case of an emergency when you need to get out. I don't think people would want to break a window and find a steel fence on the other side of the burning carriage.

Compare the odds of a training burning completely or someone falling or jumping onto the tracks.

I believe the whole Jubilee Line and any future stations get the gates which only open when the train arrives. Not only does it stop suicides but it helps the airflow of the 'tube' dramatically.

In almost all stations these days, there's a pit beneath the track at the stations. So when you jump infront of the train you'll bounce off it and fall about a metre below the train so it won't be pushing you along or killing you. You'll most likely brake bones from the impact and then the fall but it stops suicide atleast.

Just go to an overground and jump over the fence

That's a good idea, but incase the driver doesn't stop in front of the gates, they could just make the gates around the doors wider, so it's like a box of fences around the train door.

It's a good idea. :)

Aslong as you dont get on top of a train and grab the cables your all okay!!That's just as well cause they don't use an overhead wire :P

I remember seeing the flashy glassdoors at Embankment and I don't really like them. They're just so modern that it loses it's character kind of.

It just seems more normal like that, the yellowy bricks, the adverts with awful puns and the station being literally "tube" shaped.

westminster station also has that system anyway, but would cost millions and would take a few years to contruct that system of doors on every station
