I'm 17 soon so i'm looking for my first car to practise in while I take my lessons, so I was wondering what cars would be good to take a look at for my first and would I be able to buy it even though I'm still under 17?

Thanks :)

Sunny.

Vauxhall Corsa
Renault Clio
are two suggestions.

Small cars, with a small/medium engine. Itl save you abit of money on insurance

You can buy a car whenver you want mate! You just can't drive it on the roads until your 17, provisional licence holder or not.

I have a 2003 Clio (which is my first car which I bought a couple of days before my 17th) and it's fantastic - I love it. But good first cars are Fiat Punto, Ford Fiesta, Clio, Vuaxhall Corsa (basically any that fall into the "supermini" category). Hell even smaller cars like a Peugeot 106 or a Citroen Saxo will be even cheaper to run.

For cheap insurance premiums don't go any bigger than a 1.4 litre, mines is only a 1.2 and I pay about £1k a year on insurance.

Clio, Corsa, Yaris, they're the ones that pop to mind when I think small reliable cars.

Don't go anywhere near a Saxo. It'll cost you a fortune to insure!
Clios are good for insurance.

A lot of teenagers are steering towards the clio now, the clio is going to be the new saxo I think, so so many people around here our age are getting it... so I think the insurance will go sky high soon lol ... not that I know anything about it but whatevz.

Like everyone else said - small cars. :)

Good luck

Probably although I was wary of choosing an older car for my first car as they tend to be less reliable and have problems.

My car was 2002 and it hasn't been perfect, she needed a new gearbox only 9 months after I bought her, I guess it's luck of the draw really, just don't go for too high mileage, i'd say anything over 60/70k on the clock would be quite unreliable.

Although generally, the older the car, the cheaper the insurance so maybe the costs would balance out?

I think it's important to look at low insurance groups when buying your first car, it will help keep premiums low. This site is good for checking the insurance group of a car before proceeding to buy. http://www.parkers.co.uk/insurance/#ig=0

That is odd, i find cars with a "high milage" reliable still. My car had about 100k km (so thats what, 60mile or summit? (i dunno exactly) and its run fine. Its turning twelve this year too..

same. my moms merc has over 100k and it's an 07, the 02 7 has 220k but that's not that reliable. i think my honda is coming up on 80k pretty soon? honz will go forever!!!!1

100k km/60k m isn't too bad. Probably wouldn't advise going much higher though.

It has 117,000 miles on it

That is a great dea of mileage for such a small capacity car. I wouldn't entertain it myself. You need to look for a one or 2 owner car with service history and the lowest mileage possible. Nothing over 40/50K I would suggest.

Found another one for a bit more but it's a 2001 and 77,000 miles.

Well that a bit better but make sure if you go an see it that you take somebody that knows about cars and can check to see if the condition of the car matches the mileage. I would personally would keep looking. When the new plate comes in soon there will be more cars on the market.

Careful when buying small cars which are commonly bought by young drivers, although it may have 'only' 77k on it, bear in mind that a clio or a saxo etc, will most likely have been owned by some young little cretin who thinks it's mint to rev the **** off the car everywhere, engine will be *******.

Clio for definite, saves on insurance and that.

If you don't like clio's go for something that's got a small engine and not expensive, Fiat cincequento like in Inbetweeners if you have to.
