I am not sure if 'hypothetical' is the right word. I personally think some are massively overpaid for what they do. It would be nice to see it a bit more evenly dispersed throughout the leagues.

As it's private business they are as Jake said worth whatever someone is willing to spend on them. You can in a way measure a player's worth by how much revenue he may bring to a club (for example Ronaldo has reportedly brought in far more money than was spent on him through personalised shirt sales and other such things, as well as increased ticket sales and TV viewings) but of course this isn't easily reviewable before a player is bought.
