as you all know my 306 is still broken and i need a daily car, somethin decent tho. Was thinkin bout gettin a new car while repairing my current and was thinkin a 306 hdi or something similar diesel. Price range is around 1 to 1.5k top end, any suggestions? Max 1.6 petrol or 2l diesel, prefer diesel :) thx

Such a low budget really does limit you quite a lot... an older Focus diesel 1.8 would be a safe bet because they are thoroughly decent cars. Or an older Astra with the 1.7 CDTi

Yeah get a Honda or just a Corsa or Fiesta or something. Your 306 broke because it's French.

It really depends on what 'something decent' means to you, 1-1.5k may seem like a limited budget but you could actually do quite well for it if you're sensible.
If it's only temporary then why not have some fun? If you like 306s you could probably stretch to a Dturbo for that kinda money. If not, just get something cheap to get you from A to B, a 1.2 Punto or something like that, I've bought and sold a few and I have to say they're nice little cars.

well i wouldn't say i was well off or anything so decent to me isn't much, for example my current 306 is mint bodywork and 99% mint inside too and is the highest spec made of them. Got that for a grand. Only issue is the engine atm. Toying with the idea of taking it to an autoelectrician cos as it's french chances are it's electrical and thats a much cheaper option cos i really like this car lol :p but if i was to get another i'd be looking at a higher mileage hdi or dturbo 306 maybe, if i had more money i'd get a fiesta zetec s ;)

get a mk3 golf, or just put a 2.0 406 engine in the 306.

I was gonna upgrade the engine actually, but then it would've needed upgraded brakes/other stuff which i cba with. It's being repaired now anyway, will try to sell when it's working and hve more to play with

You don't pay road tax on any car over a certain age (I think it's 25 years). My Mini was '85 which was 24 years old and I had to pay tax.

Actually I think it's cars registered before a certain year.

Cars BUILT before 1st of Jan 1973. Not registered, so realistically, check to see the build dates of any '73 car.

Yeah they changed it fairly recently I think. Sucks though because now it's a fixed date and that's already 37 years ago (from the date of this post) and that will only keep getting older and older. Was way better having it as just any car over 25 years old.

Volkswagen Polo is your best bet for a car between 1-5k. They're very solid, reliable and a good little runner. My sister's is a 1.0 E, which I probably think will be too small for you? 1.6 may be a bit more nippy.
