That plane looks amazing, it's as if they have joined 3 separate plains together side by side. Are they supposed to disconnect or something? :S

Yeah, watch the video on the site and you can see it detaching. It runs like a normal plane until it gets to a specific altitude, then accelerates into space using a hybrid rocket motor (which apparently releases no toxic chemicals) at three times the speed of sound.

The video says you experience weightlessness on the flight and that the detatchable shuttle is "almost completely re-useable" Branson also added that it's thousands of times greener than spacecraft previously. You see Earth from space.

In my opinion, this is the future and a showcase of man's greatest achievement in a nutshell. With Concorde being scrapped I thought progression in the airline industry was turning to regression but this is truly amazing. Even the safety of the aircraft (http://www.virgingalactic.com/overview/safety/) has been so well designed, comparing it to a shuttlecock.

Tickets cost $200,000 with deposits starting from $20,000.

My Uncle was talking about this years ago and it's something he'll probably consider. There was talk of getting a free flight if you had a million air-miles with Virgin (I think my Uncle is about half way there :P). This has just got to be something to do before you die! :)

Seeing the Earth from space, which only a handful of people have done, is a waste of money? In that case, I think you're rather hard to please! :P

Sadly, I do think a disaster will stem from it sooner or later down the line but I wouldn't phrase it like it's something to look forward to. I find it quite odd a few people actually want the "rich money wasters" to die in an accident. Obviously lives will be lost, but arguably the next biggest problem is that it will significantly hinder progress in space travel. Why would you want to do that?

On another note, anyone know what this is supposed to mean?

Book your place in space (http://www.virgingalactic.com/booking/)

and join over 340 Virgin Galactic astronauts who will venture into space (http://www.virgingalactic.com/booking/)

Is there a certain amount of flights going out?..

Of course it's a waste of money. The people who booked tickets have more money than senses. They could go up, roll about in no gravity for 5 minutes and then go back down and that's really worth $200,000? I could go in a no grav simulator and go 50,000 ft in a plane for less than 3k. I can then buy the most expensive telescope and see all the planets still for less than $200k. I can then go in a sim again about 10 times and then go in a plane another 10 times still for under 200k

Oh waa waa, $200000 is trivial to some people. I'd do it if I had the money.

But look at bill gates. With his wealth he could do that trip 150,000 times. Or once a day for 411 years.

To A LOT of people 200k is nout.

Wow people like you really annoy me. Yes I think it's stupid and yes I wish you had enough money to go up there so I can prove my point.*REMOVED* because of how you are to people on this forum. I hate people who basically have nothing but a body and no organs. Now, I would really appreciate it if you did not reply to me anymore on here or I'll just report your posts.

Can't be bothered or know you're wrong? Good luck reporting my posts when you're banned. I gather from what you've written you think I'm not nice to people on this forum, well actually I disagree - I've helped people but whatever you say. I'd love examples but you're ignoring this thread (yeah right)!

To stop this going off topic I'll relate back to the original topic: the cost of the journey. I guess our opinions (and brain function) differ when it comes to whether or not it's a waste of money. No need to take it personally when someone has a superior opinion backed up with solid figures.

By the way, if I didn't have organs I'd be dead. I really hope you read this because I like annoying people like you. Thanks for the +rep, babe.

I imagine in 20 or so years it'll be less.

Anyway this is my dream experience tbh, to go into space for fun (ie not working for nasa or the european space station :P). I do not get why rich people like bill gates did not do this first? Richard branson is hardly the richest of the rich, unless its a collaboration effort.

I hate, absolutely hate how it is based in America when it's a british company (well branch of a british company).

I think that's how many people are going out on the flights "so far". There'll be hundreds of flights, I think I read somewhere that only a small handful go up at one time so you have enough space to fly around in.

It's interesting, but not for me. 5 mins for $200,000 just to look at the earth seems a bit steep so I'd wait until it's cheaper or they make the time up in space longer. 5 minutes doesn't seem like a long time to take in the details of the earth, let alone everywhere around it :P

i would just like to reply to this thread for the sole purpouse of pointing out your ignorant attitude towards practically anything, i fail to see how you cannot grasp the reality and/or the concept that when people have more money, they also have more disposable income, hence why yourself for example who is probably living on your weekly £5 pocket money off your parents, has less to spend than say, a successful entrepreneur who is earning a six figure salary.
notice how also, a single mother working at tesco's 5 days a week will live in a rented property and drive a small car which was cheap to buy, run and insure, whereas say a footballer, businessman or anyone else for that matter who is fairly wealthy will live in a large, bought outright house and drives a large, fast car which isn't expensive to buy, run, or insure and probably drives round laughing at less than fortunate people like you that think it's fun to run with scissors or something of a similar attire

why are you randomly picking on me anyway? It has nothing to do with you. I have no respect for the people who pay that much to go up there and that is my final say. All that money could of gone to a charity but you never see rich people give that much to a charity, they only give like 5k :( I just think that anyone who thinks the same as the rich people deserve nothing in life. They are selfish worthless people who need to get a grip of reality and what is happening around them.

tdi
13-10-2010, 05:55 PM
i'm not randomly picking on you, it's just that you're the only person that has said it's a waste of money. oh imagine giving 'ONLY 5k to charity' - a lot of rich people have earnt their money, granted a lot have not, such as footballers (who are excessively overpaid for the amount of work they do, and indeed the amount of time they don't due to 'injuries,' but that's a different debate) etc. what about specialist doctors? do they not deserve to own their money and spend it however they want? what about entepreneurs? sure, it's their idea, and they've put it towards the public, and hey, because it's so good.. it's even sold. but no. Good thing is with free will is that people can spend their money however they want. funny that.

In actual fact many celebrities and rich people have given millions, some have even given billions.

If they earn't the money, it is totally their choice what to spend it on. Not for people who are no where near as successful as them.

Calling rich people worthless makes me laugh. Do you live in a council house? Since you seem to just be jealous of their success.

Stephen
13-10-2010, 06:01 PM
I have hated rich people all my life. I am not jealous, I just think that most of them are selfish idiots. No matter how much they have, they could atleast put their money to good use instead of wasting it on crap. It's like when i was little my nanny used to tell me that she was mad at me because I didn't finish my dinner.. Could of gone to africa and saved the starving children she used to say :P. That is how I see it with money aswell so don't blame me. I have my opinions and if you don't like them then who cares. I'm not scared of some hxf haters who think my opinions aren't right

okay, so say you spend your money on computers, or bikes, model railways, whatever.. someone else, who thinks these things are 'stupid' will say that you're spending your money on 'crap.' it's true, there's always people that do. i've got a car, i enjoy spending money on it, i enjoy driving it. people will always be saying 'what a waste of money, should just buy a pedal bike'

it's swings and roundabouts, it's exactly what you're doing. at the end of the day if you're doing what you want ('you' being used here in reference to future astronauts) and it's going to make you happy then do it. it's not a waste of money. Fair enough, if I had £200k laying about it wouldn't be the first thing I'd spend it on, but the whole perspective of travelling to another planet (yes, the moon. whatever) when years ago nobody even thought that commercial space travel was possible.

Apple
13-10-2010, 06:10 PM
My views on the 200k price tag is that if you can afford it; why not? If someone has been really successful in life then it is up to them to decide what they do with their money. Lots of million/billionaires donate massive amounts of money to charities, but you can't just expect them to give all of their riches away to charity, though. You could give anyone the chance to trade shoes with a billionaire and live the good life, most of them would without a doubt say yes; does this make them selfish idiots?

Stephen

the whole 'your opinion is wrong, my opinion is right. despite what you have to say, i'm not going to listen to you' attitude shows a huge amount of ingorance and a substantial lack of maturity. Attitude like this in the *real* world, especailly in a professional environment will inevitably mean you'll be working in tesco at 40 to the point where if you save up enough, you might even be able to buy a television to watch the space flight on.

In my opinion. I wouldn't do it, only due to the fact that I wouldn't be allowed because of health issues lol. But its a good opportunity and if you have the money, and want to...why not?

As Tdi said, it's their money, they can spend it on what they wish, if they want to go into space fine. As long as they've earned it fairly, aka, not as a drug lord or something, then surely it is only fair that they should spend it as they want?
