Anything but a Vauxhall Corsa. Awful cars.

I'm currently looking for a Golf too, though a newer one than you're after. :)

Thought about a ph1 Clio 172? They go for pennies nowadays and are better to drive than the ph2 apparently. About 4 of my friends have them, one of which in rare Sunflower Yellow!

can get a focus in a 1.4 in that age/price but the 1.4 is too small for focuses lol, 16v tho

I was tempted to get a MG ZR (Trophy) but head gaskets are the biggest fault in those cars

K-series engines are notorious for head gasket failure in the MG/Rover/Lotus but are good engines. As for golfs I've owned Mk1 through to Mk5, the Mk4 would be 98-05 but make sure you get a decent spec one as the lower spec models are really not a nice place to be.
