I'll be (hopefully :P) passing my test soon and I'm looking for a car!

Currently I've got a mercedes A-class from early 2004:
http://lewishamilton.me.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/mercedes-a-class.jpg

And I just don't like it haha. Possibly because it looks more like a triangle than a car but w/e (A)

So I'm looking for something thats a decent first(ish ;)) car that's reliable and isn't too expensive (looking at <£2500 probably although obviously cheaper is better). Also it needs to look nice (A)

I'm no car expert so any ideas/recommendations you car lovers out there?

EDIT: My driving instructor's car is a new vauxhall corsa and I like how it drives (don't laugh if its rubbish ok I don't know any better) if that sways your decision.

You're better off with something like a CORSA, they're good cars thats what I am saving up to get. My practical is next week :(

Hmm yeah, I do quite like it so far (much prefer it to the Mercedes anyway)

Good luck with your test too :D

Hmm I'm not sure, I know someone who has one and it just seems to break down all the time haha

Thanks for the suggestion!

Get something which at least looks nice/had a tad power.
Can pick up a Toyota Starlet for around the £2500 mark and they go like anything and don't look half too bad either!

Edit, this is a prime example:

Japanese import 1.3 Turbo with only 97k miles

I got a clio - seems to have done well so far.
corsas are generally some of the most popular.

peugeot 106's seem to be ideal
Or if you like all the classic cars and that - you could probably get away with a mini or Golf Mk1 for £1500 or so + classic car insurance is cheaper than normal.

Cars are pretty easy to choose from, it's just insurance is a kick in the teeth for the first couple years.

5th Gen Ford Fiestas are pretty good for their age and are reasonably good value these days (< £2495). I owned one, learnt to drive in one, and a 1.4 model is pretty powerful and the fuel consumption was pretty good, better than the equivalent Corsa.

Anybody want to help me get a good quote for either an Astra, a Corsa or a similar car? I will love you long time...

Tried GoCompare? I use them for all my quotes nowdays, no one strikes cheaper.
You generally get company's like InsureTheBox quote really cheap (E.g they quoted me £600 on a subaru Impreza for the year) so I took them on it, Worst idea ever :P

First car I had was a 2009 Peugeot 207 1.6 Turbo Diesel Sport, I paid a little over £1200/year insurance on it, Main driver, Compared to £2100 on a 2004 Ford Focus 1.4, I was rather surprised, I bet you can guess which I went for.

I'll happily swap cars with you for my lovely peugeot 106, just ignore the rust you will get used to it ;). Even though peugeot's are quite good little cars to drive and if your looking for that price range i'm sure you can find something alot better than what I have anyway.

Wool Peugeot 106 friends.
If you want cheap insurance a 106 is a good idea. Second year insured, 18 and passed my test - £600
