Should the United Kingdom (in other words Britain) be dissolved in the event of Scottish independence?

The new flag of the United Kingdom of England, Wales and Northern Ireland?

In the 1700s, the Union of the Crowns brought the unification of the English and Scottish thrones together under the same monarch - a relationship similar today to that of Britain to Australia or Canada. On January 1st 1801, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was born and become a unified sovereign state with one parliament at Westminster. The rest, they say, is history.

From 1997 onwards, the Labour Government under the Blair Ministry introduced devolution to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland whereby Scotland would revive it's own parliament, Wales would have an assembly as would Northern Ireland. This constitutional change was intended to dampen down demands for independence in Scotland, yet, as the likes of Enoch Powell had warned - it made the situation worse. In 2011, the SNP under Alex Salmond achieved a majority in Holyrod and have agreed to a referendum in 2014 on whether or not Scotland is to remain a part of the United Kingdom.

If Scotland decides to leave though, where does that leave the rest of the United Kingdom? England would remain without it's own parliament whilst Wales and Northern Ireland would both maintain their assemblies - would the country be renamed the United Kingdom of England, Wales and Northern Ireland or would it stay the same? would the Union flag lose it's distinctive royal blue? would the national embelm lose the Scottish unicorn and what would replace it if so? or would the Union be completely dissolved with Wales and Northern Ireland both becoming independent from England?

What do you think should happen and what will happen in the event of Scotland leaving?

Well I'm a Yes voter for Scottish Independence, regarding the rest of the UK if they think its better together then by all means stay together. I just think Scotland should decide on whats best for our own country and not a Tory Government we didn't vote for. Actually spoke about the flag this morning, wondered if they would re-design to include Wales and Ireland or just remove the blue. Also unhappy about the bias in the news about the whole subject. Also i don't hate the English but i read an article on a site one day and seen comments like these

"Bye bye the sooner the better...."
"please say yes we dont want you"
"I am with you all the way on that. The sooner they get independence the better for us."
"yippee save us a load of money .."
"If the Scots don't get independence, tell them not to worry.... the English will start a petition.... and we will guarantee it."
"Good! Hurry up and become 'independent' just remember to take all of your vile Champaign Socialist politicians with you!
BTW, can we have back the millions of pounds of English tax payers money that you've had from us over the years?"

And i have seen this all over, So yes sooner the better. I look forward to the TV debates.

Personally I don't want Scotland to leave the UK, but I have absolutely no say in it whatsoever :P I personally just think it's a case of Scotland thinking they can do better themselves, but they would struggle really. If it did happen, who knows what would happen, but flags/emblems would surely have to change...

How so?

How so?

The currency of Scotland would be an issue initially, and I'm sure I read that Scotland would have issues with debt, credit ratings and borrowing rates. Bank failure in Scotland would be twice as bad as if it were in the UK. Scotland would also have to set up their own Army/Navy etc. Scotland would no longer have nuclear weapons. Scotland would lose importance of being an UN member. Scottish Universities would suffer from a research point of view, and I'm sure there is some sort of issue with EU membership :P

But, that being said, I'm sure you would have just as many positives for a yes vote :P And you get to vote :P

But then, all opinion polls are still looking like a 'No' vote at the moment, still plenty of time for that to change though.

As a very strong Unionist myself (somebody who is more strongly in favour of the Union than most of the people campaigning to keep it together) I have to say that I too am sick of the likes of scaremongering that Kardan has posted below. The point is - they are trying to frame the argument over economics when a) the economic scaremongering they are putting across is absolute rubbish & b) the debate should be about culture and not economics as economics doesn't make a nation.

Of course Scotland could survive on it's own, it's ridiculous to pretend otherwise - even countries with a few thousand people in can survive pretty well on their own and prosper. No, the debate should be around culture: do the majority of people in Scotland feel British or not? if they do, then they should stay. If not, then they ought to become independent.

As for the debate question itself, in the nightmare scenario of Scotland leaving - I would simply retain everything the same.

That last sentence pretty much highlights exactly why some in Scotland want independence so well done.
