This just seems fair ignorant. The course I'm planning to do is Hospitality Management (which isn't there but management is) but according to you, it's only worthwhile doing in the top 5 colleges :S Obviously you'd be referring to the UK in that sense but where I'm hoping to do it probably isn't one of the top five colleges in Ireland but it's still the best place to do a lot of the courses.

I am soon 23 and taking a degree has no age. If you work hard enough, you achieve it. :)

I know taking a degree has no relevance on your age, it's just that medicine is a 5 year course, which would mean you're at least 23 and I thought you were younger :P

So basically out of all these threads. Taking english language and fine art at a level are the only things that have your approval. Nice to know that I'm going far in life ;). Should probably just withdraw my application now.

you do realise that the majority of graduate schemes do not require a specific degree. as long as it is academic and from a good university then any degree is worthwhile - even anthropology.

So as long as a degree is academic - even though it doesn't actually guarantee you paid work afterwards - it is worthwhile?
I don't see your point here. I'd rather go to university to do a degree that will help me get a job rather than one that Oxbridge classifies as academic.

Yes. There's a reason why history, English lit, classics and modern languages are much more employable degrees than buiness studies, computing, media or journalism.

FlyingJesus
22-04-2014, 03:11 PM
Still not sure why you think modern languages is a good degree to have (other than because you're doing it) when you'll be ousted by literally anyone with a genuine second language for a job that requires it and by anyone with a brain for any job that just requires a degree

ive already told you so im not gonna bother repeating myself. all the statistics show that theyre one of the most employable degrees to have. not sure what you mean by "genuine second language"... :S

FlyingJesus

No you haven't and what's employable is knowing more than one language; there are a great many people who are bilingual without a degree and having the paper to say you can count to ten in Spanish still doesn't put you in as good stead as someone who has spent their life naturally speaking a variety of languages. It's like the difference between being raised by famous parents and doing a degree in Lady Gaga Fame Studies.

Education expert

I'd love to know what makes you an Education expert to begin with?

Secondly I'd like to know what makes you think that the above list are acceptable degree types and who you are to suggest a student taking other degrees not mentioned, are wasting their time? If the student is paying for the degree, and they wish to study it, who are you to question that?

Don't question the expertise of the expert. Having the desire to do something and the ability to pay for it does not make it a good or sensible idea.

Not that I necessarily agree with the OP but of course you can say that some degrees are a waste of time. You can pay to take a degree on fire engineering (basically teachers you about fire-fighting)... yet you don't even need it to become a fire-fighter. Waste of time and money if you ask me.

Up Edinburgh Napier University.

People might scoff at the name of it simply because they've never heard of it, but when our lecturers are regularly going to conferences as speakers & working with big companies like Dell Secureworks & Police Scotland, I'm just kinda like.... do I care? :P

One of my lecturers featured in the press this week actually: http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/heartbleed-bug-may-have-caused-insider-trading-says-web-security-expert-9307848.html

That guy is a wizard at everything. x_x
