With the new 9/11 Memorial Musuem opened up in New York some people have commented that a gift shop selling such items as mugs, magnets, post cards about the event to be tasteless:

Do you find this insensitive?

Depends really. If there's a postcard with a picture of the twin towers and something saying 'In memory for those that lost their lives', I would think that was fine. A postcard with the twin towers mid-collapse wouldn't be.

If the profits are being used to maintain the memorials, support the families etc - then I'm all for it.

If the profits are being used for anything else, then it's seriously wrong to capitalise on such a big, catastrophic event.

It is a bit tasteless, not as much as having a fast food place in Auschwitz though!! Where is the money being raised from it going?

The profits are going towards the running costs of the memorial.

The museum has a $63m operating cost, and it's worth noting that the Holocaust museum also has a gift shop.

Understandable if it's going to operating costs.

I remember going the National Holocaust Museum in Washington and bought a really nice bracelet saying "What you do matters"

Amazing how people still think it was "terrorists" who did it.

Well Evanora let me give you a little lesson on subjects. Thread is about 9/11 gift shop. The Subject is 9/11. What I said is about 9/11. I see you still haven't gotten to year 4 yet. Keep on trying love, I know you can make it, maybe a few more years!

OT: 9/11 rescue efforts were amazing and I highly respect everyone whome took part in helping out!

Shame those who were part of the rescue team are not getting the proper financial and medical aid they desperately need, due to many respiration issues, including cancer, which was brought on while breathing in the **** while helping.

Nah, the subject is 'Is a gift shop suitable?' not 'Who caused 9/11?'

Variety. Alot of people have mentioned the tacky hats, small stuffed animals and so on but they don't inform you about the books, posters and in remembrance memorabilia. I went to the 9/11 memorial and it definitely took my breath away....and to think i could take a piece of that away with me is fab.
