Manchester united sack manager Louis van Gaal after serving two years of his three year contract.

The former Netherlands boss, 64, is believed to earn around £6.4m a year.

Mourinho's appointment is expected to be confirmed after the 53-year-old Portuguese meets senior United officials on Tuesday.

Manchester United confirmed Van Gaal's departure at 20:30 BST, praising his "great professionalism and dignity throughout", while adding "a decision on a successor as manager will be announced soon".

In a separate club statement released at the same time, Van Gaal said he was "very disappointed" not to see out his "intended three-year plan".

As a Liverpool fan i was hoping they would keep him..

Ha.

If it is official that Jose is going there then they've done good. Although i can never imagine Jose in a Utd tracksuit.
Gutted as i put a bet on with someone that Jose would not go to Utd, then 10 minutes later BBC Sport released the story. Damn.

I think it has been inevitable all year, but I do think its really a shame. There needs to be a change in the rules for my managers in my honest opinion as it is just way to cut throat these days.

They should have fired him before the FA Cup final, it's a little harsh to sack him after winning it even though it was inevitable.
