I'm on O2 and i've just subscried to texts from twitter.
Are they free?

Yeah I am, and I looked at twitter phone help and it says twitter charge you nothing.

does your contract give you free/unlimited web browsing then?

you can just send a text to twitter and it updates it for you. i do it with facebook.
