Every statue will be given greater protection from "baying mobs" and road names could be saved from the "revisionist purge" of Labour councils, under law changes to be published on Mondayhttps://t.co/hMVElO2qHqRobert Jenrick is to change the law so that historic statues, plaques, memorials or monuments cannot be removed without going through a formal planning process.

Twelve thousand statues are covered by the law changes.Mr Jenrick wants to stop leftwing councils from replacing street names which are linked to the Empire with more modern versions if there is not clear majority for it among people living there.

The move is one of the first salvoes by the Tory government in the culture war.Great news.. @RobertJenrick says: "We live in a country that believes in the rule of law, but when it comes to protecting our heritage, due process has been overridden. That can’t be right.

"Local people should have the chance to be consulted whether a monument should stand or not...
Mad Maoist history revisionists have no right to erase our own history from us.
Usually it is a small pressure group of far left wingers and self-proclaimed anti-racism campaigners who get their way despite the people of an area, town or city wanting the statue or place name to remain. The loud and vocal minority getting their way over the majority. It's got to stop. The toppling of the Edward Colston statue in Bristol was an absolute disgrace to see and the Cecil Rhodes statue over Oxford briefly came under threat.
President Macron has taken a similar robust stance in France, declaring that not a single statue or monument in the Republic will be toppled or removed.
