Personally I don't think anything should be illegal unless it affects someone else involuntary.
Anyway how an electronic device which will go out of fashion soon enough is worth more than something he is most likely to keep forever is beyond me.
Two things surprised me about this:
1.) Why would you do that?
2.) Kidneys are worth a lot of Apple hardware.
I don't see why he'd do it but it was his choice.
