    Default House of Commons votes against ALL Brexit options

    House of Commons votes against ALL Brexit options

    Okay so... a few days ago, the House of Commons voted to basically throw hundreds of years of constitutional convention in the bin and the Commons seized control of the standing order (business of Parliament) papers for a day, from the government. It may seem nothing to some, but the fact they are trashing convention in this way will have consequences in the future in the same way the Speaker now openly taking sides has now caused severe long-term damage to the office itself.

    But anyway, so they did that (led by the likes of 'Sir' Oliver Letwin, Dominic Grieve, Nick Boles, Hilary Benn... you know, the usual suspects) and said "Parliament will now take back control" from the government on this issue. So tonight, the Remainers plotted a series of "indicative votes" whereby the Commons would vote on options which have ALREADY been defeated time and time again (but Speaker Bercow doesn't mind Remain amendments coming back multiple times) thinking they would win.

    And the result? The Commons couldn't agree on *any* course of action.

    So we're now back to square one with No Deal as the legal de facto.

    I had a right laugh tonight though, thanks Letwin/Grieve/Boles/Benn.

    This is exactly what I assumed would happen and exactly the problem and why no brexit deal would be approved, because there’s not enough support for any option. Deadlock forever!!!!!????!!!!!

    Couple of close ones, hopefully that doesn't mean we'll have more May-style revoting and revoting and revoting and revoting until someone gets the answer they want. Of course these votes were nonbinding anyway but still good that not ALL the members of the Commons are willing to bend over and tell Tusk he can do what he likes with us

    Today is the day we should have been leaving, and the Meaningful Vote is coming back to the HoC for a third time.

    @Zak;

    They've already voted 3 times on a second referendum too.

    I find the backstop in the Withdrawal Agreement unacceptable, but this is interesting.

    Let's assume the EU did try and keep NI in the backstop - there's actually nothing they can do if we decide otherwise and rip the treaty up. Not like they can invade. Perhaps we Brexiteers should just push it through now to get over the exit line. Once out, the Agreement can be voided should a future HMG wish to do so. Or alternatively, if we were trapped - subject the WA to a referendum on voiding it. EU would be powerless.

    And we do it back, particularly messing up the Irish Republic's trade.
