Default NHS to receive extra £384m a week, government to announce on Monday

More than £350m extra a week for NHS, Hunt announces, as Theresa May locks Britain into leaving EU

Government to announce Brexit dividend for 70th birthday of NHS as Britain leaves the EU

The boost for the health service, which the Prime Minister will set out in a speech tomorrow, is intended to mark the 70th anniversary of its creation, partly by drawing on the “Brexit dividend” that will arise from the country ceasing payments to the EU.

Writing in The Sunday Telegraph, Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary, who campaigned for Remain during the 2016 referendum, says the Brexiteer pledge of extra funding for the NHS “can now unite us all”.

In 2016, the UK government paid £13.9bn to the EU budget, according to the Office for National Statistics, and the EU funded projects and other spending in this country amounting to £4.4bn. But many economists argue that the cost of Brexit, in terms of loss of economic activity and therefore revenue to the Treasury, will far outweigh any budgetary gain from leaving.

Theresa May will spell out her plans on television interviews before explaining the changes to NHS staff in a major speech in London on Monday.

Government sources defended their record on the NHS, saying funding had increased every year since the party came to power in 2010. But they said it now urgently needed more to meet rising demand caused by people living longer, and the cost of more complex and effective treatments for patients with complex conditions.
    Good stuff.

Now, abolish the Department for International Aid and spend that £11bn here in this country too!

Wait what, did I miss something? £20 billion in 6 years is £64m a week not £350m?

£350m a week is £20b in just over 57 weeks.

It's gonna be "per year" so basically in 2024 it'll be £20bn more than it is now, but will go up in increments until then - so yeah, it definitely won't be £350m a week from the get go. They could technically cut all funding to £0.00 up to 2023 and then ramp it all the way back up for 2024, that'd keep the promise and help pay for it all

Other media sources are saying £600m boost but the rest is from tax increases/borrowing, this is the Brexit bonus part.

Yay for more NHS funding. Just hope it’s able to be kept up with after Brexit hoping nothing plunges and the funding situation doesn’t change.

But the NHS does desperately need more funds so that’s great.

The PM spoke on this earlier this morning.

By 2023/2024 an extra £600m a week, of which just over £350m is the Brexit dividend.

It's funny watching a lot of continuity remainers going bananas over this on Twitter.

Hope they don't suddenly start claiming responsibility for the bus after all this time having to explain to people that it was nothing to do with the party

Don’t hit me with a nasty political response for this because it’s a genuine question

When the bus came out SEVERAL top researchers, organisations, academics etc etc all debunked that figure of 350m per week... How is it that it has come true? Was it just extreme scepticism? Or is this not solely from Brexit budget?

It was true-ish with the caveat that we do actually get it reduced (and before payment is sent, not as a cashback amount) so what we end up sending is rather less. It's "come true" because inflation can help make it happen If by 2023/24 the increase is £350m/week on what the NHS currently gets, that's excellent (and importantly, well above inflation) but isn't quite the same bonus as it would have been in 2016

In essence, literally everyone from all sides has been fudging figures to suit their viewpoint as usual. The changes announced are good either way

I'll believe it when I see it. Staff retention is shocking, the amount of new girls I see coming in and leaving so soon because they can't cope with the demand is really sad.
