Has anyone ever been interrailing or done something similar, travelling around Europe? I want to do it next summer so bad it seems like such an amazing opportunity!

The tickets actually seem quite cheap but I imagine the costs of accom, food etc will be quite a lot

I spent about three months travelling europe this year, I was not interrailing but met many people who did. From the people I met it seems like a great idea. I do think you should have a bit of planning in advance as you may struggle to get transport from some of the smaller places also you would want to have an idea of a route planned. Obviously with these things leave room to change or to stay longer at places. Also you would probably want to focus on one region rather than trying to see a lot. Like the people I met did Benelux, France and Spain (however I think they only did Barcelona in Spain which is a cool city but I think there is a lot more to see in Spain).

In summary I would recommend it or even checking something out like Busabout which is slightly more planned but it means you don't have to worry about accommodation and you meet lots of people doing a similar route

In terms of costs outside transport, it very much depends on where you are travelling. I was personally quite tight on accommodation but spent a lot of money on food and drinking. Switzerland for example was quite expensive: 30+ franks a night most places, 5 franks for a beer, 10 franks at least for a decent meal Vs somewhere like Portugal where you can pay €12 a nightish for a bed, €5 for a good meal and like €2 for a beer.
Like anything you would probably want to over budget though. This is all still quite fresh in my mind so let me know if you have any questions. I'm probably going to do a bit more of Europe again next summer

EDIT: whoops didn't realise how old this thread was lol

Never done, doesn't really appeal tbh.

I was reading a while ago this is apparently an old way to travel. Nowadays people tend to go around Indochina, China, India and places like that via rail/coach rather than just around continental Europe on railways. It's probably cheaper too with accomodation/food etc.

I really want to travel around India though (New Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, Jaipur, Madras, Amritsar etc).
