Default Russia 'kills 17 North Caucasus militants'

Russian forces have killed 17 rebels during fighting in the volatile North Caucasus region, officials have said.

Clashes took place in Ingushetia, a small Russian republic next to Chechnya, Russia's national anti-terrorism committee said.

One report said three Russian police officers had also been killed.

Russia has been struggling to combat an Islamist insurgency in the North Caucasus, where insurgents want to create an Islamic state.

The Russian raid involved ground forces and an air strike, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

"As a result of a pinpoint strike by the air force and a ground operation, a rebel base was destroyed," Nikolay Sentsov, a spokesman for the anti-terrorism committee was quoted as saying.

"Suicide bomber terrorists were being trained there, in particular for terrorist attacks in the republics of North Ossetia and Ingushetia," he added.
Good job tbh, after several terrorism attacks in Russia, I think it would be devestating to see more.

Interesting, never knew of problems like this in Russia before. It's hard to say what I think seeing as this is new to me. I assume the people of that region do not want it to become an Islamic state? An interesting way to tackle the problem, particularly if it is supporting terrorist activities, but I do not know the full story and barely know much of Russia and the way they treat criminals and people against the state.

Yeah, if you remember the airport bombings, metro bombings, bombings near police stations, apartment bombings. That region is already an Islamic state, no one has anything against it, everyones happy, its just that a war broke out when Chechnya wanted independence, but Russia said no because it was literally inside Russia, surrounded by other Russian cities, so how could they possibly give them independence, especially as the majority of people didnt mind if they were in Russia. They do however, have their own president, their on parliament, a bit like Scotland here in the UK. But yeah, a war broke out and after that, there have been loads of terrorist attacks in Russia. Russia treat all criminals terribly, I know this as I am Russian myself, but maybe its the right thing to do? However, I dont think that beating the **** out of someone and I mean brutaly, like nearly battered to death, is right. I saw an article on BBC news not long ago about police officers in Russia being arrested for sending in gay prisoners, to rape other prisoners who didnt obey the police.

Hmm, when you mentioned it's a state surrounded by other Russian cities, it reminded me of an area in one of the Scandinavian countries which is basically a small section of a city that's gone independent. You would think they could allow them some independence, yet have some minor control over them. It's a shame they're using terror tactics to get their point across, but unfortunately it's very common now :/

Thats what they have done, they have their own president, pariliament, laws etc, just a part of Russia because its actually inside Russia, if that makes sense.
