Asda criticised over sweatshirt that 'perpetuates rape culture'

    Quote Originally Posted by Telegraph
A children's sweatshirt sold by supermarket chain Asda has sparked an online row after a shopper deemed its slogan to be sexist.

"Quite literally gobsmacked and raging to see this in Asda Huntly," wrote Debbie Dee in a Facebook post, picturing the blue top bearing the slogan 'Boys Will Be Boys.'

The sweatshirt, priced at £4, prompted Ms Dee's ire as she deemend the phrase to be "very problematic".

"It has historically and is still being used to excuse bad behaviour (in boys and men) like hitting, being destructive or boisterous. And even as far as excusing rape and sexual assault," she wrote.

"Look I get it. Most people say this and and don’t mean any harm by it. But boys having their behaviour excused like this from an early age – this message of being above the rules, it sticks.

"This idea trivialises male behaviour and is the beginning of how society has one rule and set of expectations for boys and another for girls.

"In my opinion, this particular phrase perpetuates rape culture. How many women have been harassed by men and had it explained away as 'boys will be boys?'"

Ms Dee's post has been shared thousands of times on Facebook, attracting comments supporting her views.

"More than sexist, it’s a potentially dangerous mindset for both men and women," said one commenter. “Not what our kids should be taught as acceptable or our youngsters."

“This phrase is so harmful to our children – I’m horrified that Asda is willing to perpetuate this outdated platitude,” added another.

However, Ms Dee's post also attracted a number of responses angrily criticising her remarks. The post has now been deleted.

An Asda spokesperson said: "Our aim is to make clothes people love, never to offend."

To be fair I saw the original post on fb and there were literally like 3 people (all friends with her ofc) who agreed with her, everyone else was saying how ridiculous she is and quite rightly calling her sexist for assuming that the default state of a boy is "rapist". She ended up turning comments off because she couldn't handle people telling her how wrong she was

Why does the article say £4 when the sweatshirt in the pic quite clearly has a £6 label on that's the real question

People these days will always make mountains out of mole hills so they can complain about something, and they're just too sensitive. I think the only problem here is that she saw a boys hoodie and decided to turn it into something relating to rape out of no where.
