Fine for them but not indie devs. Oh and in regards to web pages, who designs websites for larger than 1024px? Most monitors are still at that resolution no?

But with the iPad we aren't talking about a screen size change, we are talking about a resolution change. The reason Habbo changed was because the window got larger, not because it had more PPI.
According to W3's statistics, in January 2010 76% of people were using resolutions higher than 1024px wide, so yes, the second biggest cohort would be 1024px wide, but as you can see from the stats, it's decreasing dramatically year by year.

76% of a tech sites users are greater than 1024px, of course. That makes perfect sense but thats not a reflection of the market as a whole because people interested in Computing will generally have larger monitors and more powerful computers. The fact that it's only 76% says a lot, if it were in the 90%'s then I'd understand where you are coming from but 76% of webdesigners have a higher resolution than 1024px isn't a lot. What you'd need is the stats from a site like BBC or Google and then you'd be able to draw an accurate summary. I'm willing to bet the average is below 1024, particularly because of the boom in laptop and netbook sales.

Netbooks generally are 1024 wide and higher (you can't say these are very popular though), whilst laptops are generally 1280 wide or higher nowadays.

But that's exactly it, if you buy one now it's the same or higher but most people have devices that are a few years old. Don't forget we also live in one of the richest and most technology based countries in the world, websites are a global thing and many countries have a much slower technology uptake. Going back to the original point even you can't deny that webdesigners as a general rule do not design for greater than 1024px. In fact I'll pull you this link from a webdesign website from around this time last year:
