David Cameron immigration pledge in tatters as net immigration stands at 298,000

Figures means Prime Minister has failed in pledge to cut net immigration to below 100,000 and is actually higher than when he took power

The figure is a huge embarrassment for the Prime Minister and means immigration is higher than it was when he took office.

He won power on a “no ifs, no buts” election pledge to bring net migration – the difference between those arriving and those leaving the UK – to below 100,000.

But figures from the Office for National Statistics show that the figure for year up to September 2014 was 298,000 – some 54,000 higher than we the Coalition took charge.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "The Prime Minister is disappointed with today's figures.

"He had said previously that we have not made as much progress as he would like but he had also said that he doesn't regret making this commitment because he thinks it is in the interests of our country, that we will have a better, stronger country, if we have lower net migration."

The spokesman said cutting migration to tens of thousands was Mr Cameron's "ambition" for the next Parliament, but declined to say it was a "promise".

The figures show there is "more to do" and "underlines the challenges" faced by the Government in cutting migration.

A large factor in the increase is migration from the Eurozone, and people did not predict that the UK economy would grow so quickly while European economies stagnate, the spokesman said.

Last November Theresa May, the Home Secretary, appeared to indicate ministers had abandoned the pledge by claiming it had been "blown off course" by EU immigration.

Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, the figure was "very embarrassing for the Conservatives" and evidence the Prime Minister had "failed spectatularly" in meeting his target.

The total number of people arriving in the UK in the year to September 2014 was 624,000 - the highest on record.

Some 320,000 left the country, giving the net immigration of 298,000, which is the highest since the record level of 320,000 in 2005.
My Lord the figure just climbs up and up and up and up and yet whilst the public have had enough of mass immigration and open borders the politicians keep spitting in our faces and telling barefaced LIES to us. The Conservatives will pay a heavy price for this.

Thoughts?
