    Default Days off/Statutory leave

So with Corbyn saying something about 4 bank holidays and something else the other day I read, it was interesting to see how people reacted to having more days off (even though 4 new bank holidays might not mean any more statutory leave).

Anyway I figured I would see what people on here think of:
    1. Corbyns proposal of 4 bank holidays
    2. Statutory leave as a concept
    3. The 28 days of statutory leave in the UK - too high, low or about right?

For comparisons sake, the minimums inc. public holidays are: the UK has 28 days; Germany has 29 days; France has 36 days and the US has 0 and is up to the employer.

I already fly the English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish crosses/saltires for a week each around each patron saint day in place of the Union flag so I actually agree with Corbyn on making the patron saint days (Saints George, Andrew, David and Patrick) British-wide holidays as it would strengthen Unionism across the country and hopefully result in something to us like St Patrick's Day already is, especially in the Republic of Ireland.

Whether we could add them as replacements for existing holidays or just as additional ones I don't know. I don't for a second believe he's suggested it because he's a British patriot though - he's promising everything and anything like any socialist does. If I am not mistaken, this idea was actually Ukip policy at the last election so nice to see another good idea being nicked.

Infact if I had my way, I would add and re-order a lot of holidays. In addition to the patron saint days I would restore Empire (Commonwealth) Day and make it a public holiday along with the Queen's Official Birthday.

The centrepiece of the day was an organised and ritualistic veneration of the Union flag. Then, schoolchildren were given the afternoon off, and further events were usually held in their local community.

Empire Day became more of a sombre commemoration in the aftermath of World War I, and politically partisan as the Labour Party passed a resolution in 1926 to prevent the further celebration of Empire Day. After World War II, the event fell into rapid decline, and Prime Minister Harold Macmillan bowed to the inevitable on 18 December 1958, when he announced in Parliament that the name of Empire Day would be changed forthwith to Commonwealth Day.
Along with a similar law to Australia which is that any school that receives public money must fly the flag all-year round.

Makes no difference to me what days are public holidays.

I don't necessarily care for extra days either, but who would say no to an extra day off work per year?

But yeah the amount we have compared to US is massive, I think most people in America are on like 5-10 days holiday per year? At least from what I've seen from IT employees.

I don't care when they are, although I wouldn't mind them being a bit more spread out.

If we get more then its a win.

Is St George's day becoming a public holiday? I need to move back to the UK so I get my birthday off every year haha.

Does the UK not get paid for public holidays? According to that wiki page you don't?

I get 28 days, the standard. Plus St George's day (only if it falls on a weekend, don't get it off in lieu as its just a nice thing my boss does). If we had 4 more bank holidays it would be fab, but I'd rather just have 4 more holidays to take when I choose lol. Business owners aint gonna like it, so they're all gonna not vote for that are they

Think we have enough already, but I agree they should be more spread out, 4 in 2 month is a bit excessive.

I'd love if there were more bank holidays from Sept - Dec, it seems like SO stretched out??

I get far too much leave though its fab! 27 standard days, all the bank holidays, the week between Christmas and New Year, a day in November and 2 extra days at Easter. I think when you work it out the maximum I could get is around 40 - this year it's 37 in total.

Used to get 21 (not incl. bank holidays) so huge diff for me
