I've never actually watched Eurovision before, is that a good choice? I thought the country had to be in Europe

they have to be part of the european broadcasting union (EBU) which is... many, many countries in the world including America, S Korea, Australia... loads. Only the "active" members though (those in, or close to, Europe) are eligible to enter Eurovision though, with other countries such as Australia being invited because of their Associate Membership status.

There's quite a few middle Eastern countries (Israel, Azerbaijan, Armenia), a few "are these really geographically Europe though?" like Cyprus,Turkey and Georgia, and even Morocco has competed once (and that's definitely not Europe!)
