Nope you had red/blue/yellow which are "classic" but of course only have the 8 gym badges and 151 pokémon, then silver/gold came out which had 16 badges but it was all the same style as before graphics-wise and had 251 pokémon I think, then crystal was a mix of gold and silver with a whole one extra pokémon lol
Newer ones are kinda crap yeah although the new bike is pretty cool with bunnyhop lol

I loved crystal, gold and silver.

Pearl and Diamond are too weird.

R/B/Y were all fantastic but mainly because they were the originals. G/S were also great but I think the one I played most was G. The downside to G/S was the Indigo area was proper restricted with what you could do and where you could go (what I'm saying here may only make sense to me)!

Ruby and Sapphire were pretty cool too but no-where near as good as the originals. I didn't play Emerald but I believe that it was just the equivilent of what Crystal was but with Ruby and Sapphire so it's not as if I missed out on anything.

I'm yet to play Diamond and Pearl but my sister has a DS so I'm considering buying them in the future to see for myself what they're like. I've been told they're good so... I wonder if they're making any more?

EDIT: I completely forgot about the remakes of red and blue (or in this case, blue was renamed to green). I liked the way that you were able to play the original adventure but with improved graphics and gameplay.
